Merkel holds talks to form coalition govt

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has commenced a five day talk with parties to form a stable coalition government with a view to end the political stalemate in Germany that prevails for more than three months after its election. Germany is still without a new government.

The five-day talks will include Mrs Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU), its sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU), and the Social Democrats (SPD).

On arrival at the SPD Head Quarters Merkel shook hands with SPD Chairman Schulz . She said she was optimistic a deal could be struck, while Schulz said he would not draw any red lines and that "new times call for new politics".
