Indian Union cabinet's nod for capital punishment for child rapists

The Indian Union Cabinet has approved an executive order to introduce capital punishment for child rapists. This change to India's penal code is applicable to those convicted of raping a child under the age of 12.

The decision was made at a meeting of the Union Cabinet convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi within hours of his return from a foreign tour, reports indicate.

Union minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi had earlier initiated the move to change the law in midst national grief and anger over the gang rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua. At Saturday's meeting, the proposal was formally moved by the Home Ministry.
