Amit Shah’s remark will cause unrest in India: Alagiri warns

KS Alagiri

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K.S.Alagiri has cautioned that Home Minister Shah’s proposal to make Hindi as common language in India would result in unrest.

He said: “The Congress governments, headed by Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri made sure that English continued as one of the official languages just so that Hindi was not imposed on people who did not speak the language.

Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi protected the rights of people who do not speak Hindi. The United Progressive Alliance gave ‘Semmozhi’ status to Tamil language.

Do not play with the sentiments of non-Hindi speaking population. The BJP is trying to divide the country on linguistic lines so that it can divert people’s attention from the country’s economy that was in the doldrums.”
