Queen to be succeeded by Prince of Wales as Head of the Commonwealth

69 year old heir to the British Throne Prince Charles is to succeed Queen Elizabeth 11 as Head of the Commonwealth. Earlier, the Queen had said it was her "sincere wish" that Prince Charles would follow her in the role.

This has been approved by the Heads of the Commonwealth. Commonwealth leaders meeting in London confirmed in a statement that the next chief of the group "shall be His Royal Highness Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales." That won't happen until he succeeds his mother on the throne when she dies. Leaders of the Commonwealth have been discussing the issue at a meeting behind closed doors at Windsor Castle. The head role is non-hereditary so is not automatically passed on when the Queen dies, with suggestions it might have rotated among the 53 leaders.
