MK Stalin condemns the dissolution of Sri Lankan Parliament

DMK Leader M.K. Stalin has condemned the dissolution of the Sri Lankan Parliament by President Maithripala Sirisena as a blow to democracy in the neighbouring country. He urged that the Indian government had a duty to ensure the safety of Tamils in Sri Lanka in the wake of the political crisis in the neighbouring island nation.

In a statement issued, Stalin states: “The President has crushed the country’s Constitution, which is clear that Parliament cannot be dissolved within four-and-a-half years after the election unless two-thirds of its members make a request for the same.

He has created a Constitutional crisis and posed a threat to the safety of Tamils.

We accuse the Indian government of indifference towards the political developments in the neighbouring nation, especially the coming together of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Mr. Sirisena. India’s silence was responsible for the dissolution of the Sri Lankan Parliament.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi should condemn the dissolution [of Parliament] in no uncertain terms and take steps to protect Tamils.”
