Madras High Court upholds disqualification of 18 AIADMK legislators

Madras High Court 700 01

The Madras High Court has upheld the Tamil Nadu Speaker's decision disqualifying the 18 AIADMK legislators from the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Justice Sathyanarayanan said there was no infirmity in the order of the Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal. He said: "All the material that were availble at the time of passing of the order by the Speaker alone have been taken into consideration and this court cannot go into the subsequent events."

The verdict also connotes that the Election Commission have to notify by-elections to the 18 constituencies that have now fallen vacant.

The third judge of the high court, heard the case on Thursday after a two-member HC bench had on June 14 given a split verdict on disqualification of MLAs by the assembly Speaker.
