Preventing Governor from discharging duties is punishable offence:Raj Bhavan

Raj Bhavan on Sunday warned of legal action against any attempt to prevent the Tamil Nadu Governor from discharging his duties for it is an offence punishable under the law.

The statement from Raj Bhavan said the institution of the governor is that of a constitutional authority who enjoys full authority and freedom to visit any part of the state. He enjoys unhindered freedom to meet and interact with officials of the state, who are members of the executive wing. This helps the governor take the right decisions at critical times and for being able to send meaningful monthly reports to the President of India and for this the former should be familiar with the features and characteristics of the various districts and beware of the problems faced by the people.

The statement has been issued in the context of the DMK leader and other parties opposing the Governor Banwarilal Purohit's visits to various districts.

The statement further said that the office of the Governor was protected under Section 124 of the Indian Penal Code and "any attempt to overawe or assault or use criminal force will be dealt with as per the law".
