DMK Patriarch Kalagnar Karunanithy was accorded a State Funeral with 21 gun salute in Chennai on Wednesday, August 8. His body was placed in a casket along with the party flag, his trade mark yellow shawl and black glasses.

The wooden casket with golden handles had an epitaph which Karunanithy himself had dictated to his son Stalin three decades ago. It reads as:

ஓய்வெடுக்காமல் உழைத்தவன்
இதோ ஓய்வு கொண்டிருக்கிறான்

"One who toiled without rest, takes eternal rest here"

His mortal remains were kept for public to pay homage. Thereafter his last journey commenced at 4 pm. Thousands of mourners including relatives, dignitaries, people from all walks of life, persons of all ages and from across the country participated in his last journey that marked the end of an era. He was laid to rest next to his political mentor Anna.
