US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon has assured that US stands by the Government of Sri Lanka in its commitment to strengthening democracy, democratic institutions and practices, good governance, the rule of law, justice, reconciliation, accountability, and parliamentary procedures.
He also welcomed progress of Sri Lanka on constitutional reform, the return of private land held by security forces, and the establishment of an independent and permanent Office of Missing Persons.
US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon, the highest ranked official from the Trump administration to visit Sri Lanka was addressing the media conference after Sri Lanka and the United States convened the second Partnership Dialogue in Colombo yesterday
The meeting was led by Sri Lanka Foreign Secretary Prasad Kariyawasam and Thomas Shannon.
He stated: “The whole world is watching Sri Lanka and they want to see Sri Lanka succeed because they understand that it is uniquely relevant to other countries around the world. Therefore we are prepared to assist Sri Lanka on this journey. We always want things to go faster but the solutions have to be enduring and sustainable and we want to be Sri Lanka’s partner during this entire process.”
He added that the US would continue to work with the United Nations Human Rights Council as well as the Sri Lankan Government to achieve the reconciliation aims agreed to by Colombo.
