The strike held at the Fort and Maradana Railway Stations by Engine drivers and railway guards has been called off following a discussion at the Presidential Secretariat today, October 12.
Meanwhile Ministry of Transport had stated that all Railway Department personnel will be granted a period of one hour to halt the current protest and return to their posts. It was further stated that the Railway service will be deemed as an essential service should the protests continue beyond the specified one hour time period.
As a result of sudden cancellation of train services on October 11, there was a tensed situation at the Colombo Fort Railway Station. The commuters who had arrived at the stations were angered and had stormed the office and caused damage to property, it was reported. Police had been summoned to maintain order.
