President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe graced the event held to launch the Economic Development Plan of the present unity government called "Vision 2025: An Enriched Country"". It was held at the BMICH on September 4 under the patronage of the Media Ministry under the directions of Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera.
"The government will help everyone enjoy the benefits of social justice and market competition by creating a knowledge-based, highly competitive social market. Overall, we aim to raise per capita income to USD 5000 per year and generate one million new employment opportunities by 2020," President and Premier noted.
The Vision 2025 has proposed to build a strong economy through reconciliation and democracy ushering in a change in political culture escaping from the dark shadows of the past.
Following the presentation of the program, the President and the Prime Minister participated in a discussion outlining the vision instead of normal traditional speeches. Several young men and women participated in the discussion had the opportunity to ask questions relating to the program from the President and the Prime Minister for the benefit of the audience.
Answering the questions Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said that discussions are underway on 2025 economic reforms program. Amendments will be made if it is necessary, he said. Stability of the country is essential to go forward, he noted. It will be created for the national government to make Sri Lanka a prosperous country integrating trade, economy and social justice. Sri Lanka will be transformed into a hub in the Indian Ocean with a knowledge based, highly competitive, social market economy.
