Meethotamulla garbage dump collapse kills 19


A collapse at garbage dump at Meethotamulla in Colombo has killed 19 people and left many injured.

A section of the 300-foot garbage dump at Meethotamulla caught fire and collapsed burying over 145 houses on Friday.

Death toll is expected to rise as an unknown number of people are still missing, reports say.

The injured are receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.

Over 600 people belonging to 180 families have been displaced. The displaced have been sheltered temporarily at the Terrence N De Silva Maha Vidyalaya in Kolonnawa and nearby community centers.

Relief measures have also commenced.
