Incumbent Govt committed to protect media freedom: PM

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has observed that the incumbent government is totally committed to media freedom. Journalists have not been subjected to any attacks such as abductions, murders or intimidation since 2015 after the unity government assumed power.

He was delivering the keynote address at the UNESCO Seminar on 'Reinforcing Regional Cooperation to Promote Freedom of Expression and the Rule of Law in Asia through Ending Impunity for Crimes Against the Journalists', held at Taj Samudra, Colombo on Monday, December 4. 

He went on that during the past regime many journalists were attacked murdered, and harassed. But, we have ensured that such incidents do not occur again in the country. We have a free media in the country. We are proud that we have earned global recognition through our performances, our good governance. People who were responsible for attacks and harassments on journalists would be brought to book.

Prime Minister said: "We welcome the UN Plan of Action process to protect the safety of journalists and we continue to strengthen the democracy in Sri Lanka, we'll ensure the Plan of Action's smooth implementation."
