Refrain from holding election propaganda at religious places: EC to candidates

Chairman of the Elections Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya has stated that the Election Commission has directed all political parties to refrain from holding election related propaganda or discussions directly or indirectly at religious places or centres under any circumstances.

The directive has been made to ensure the observance of election laws during the forthcoming LG elections. He has stated that since imposing laws is not adequate to ensure justice and fair play during an electoral process, they will take measures to educate the voters and the candidates on the importance of safeguarding election laws.
He has added that in addition it is proposed launch a social media campaign to create awareness among the voters on the election and election laws. The theme of the campaign will be 'Vote is your right', 'Vote is your voice', 'Vote is your power', and 'Vote is your future'.

He has stressed that action would be taken to prevent political parties from misusing State property for election related activities. Misusing government property for canvassing is a punishable offence, subject to a Rs. 100,000 fine and two years imprisonment. The Commission has the power to stop and seize government vehicles used by any candidate and also take into possession, funds and detain staff used for canvassing.
