Colombo Archbishop urges action against politicians, officials named by the Commission

Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith

The Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has urged the government to take immediate legal action against the politicians and officials who had had links with Saharan and those who had not taken action to prevent such attacks.

He was speaking to the media after the conclusion of the Easter Sunday service held at St. Lucia Cathedral in Kotahena, Colombo.

Archbishop questioned whether the former President, who had neglected his responsibilities and went abroad despite receiving information that a terrorist attack was imminent, had any dignity to seek re-election leading a party and stated that it was a shame that those who had forgotten their duties and allowed the deaths of the people were ready to seek re-election.

He added that no one would be allowed to deceive Christians again. The Presidential Commission appointed to probe the Easter Sunday Attack had clearly named the politicians and officials who had links with Saharan Hashim and those who had not taken any necessary steps to prevent the terrorist attack including the former President Maithripala Sirisena. It was a shame that the ministers and parliamentarians who dealt with the suicide bomber Saharan Hashim were still sitting in Parliament.

He went on that they had stressed that legal action against the former president should not be delayed as he had been found guilty by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the terrorist attack on Easter Sunday. Why was President Gotabaya Rajapaksa waiting to take action against them and implement the recommendations made by the Commission.
