Jaffna High Court dismisses petitions seeking permission to hold Maveerar commemoration

Jaffna High Court Judge Annalingam Premshankar issued an order on Friday, November 20 dismissing the petitions seeking permission to hold Maveerar commemoration and to restrain the police from banning them. Court delivered the order upholding the preliminary objection raised by the Attorney General that the provincial high court had no jurisdiction to hear the petitions.

Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena, Deputy Solicitor General Haripriya Jayasundara and State Counsel Zaheeda Bharri appeared for the Attorney General.

President’s Counsel M.A.Sumanthiran convener of Justice for People with Attorney at Law Sayanthan appeared for one petitioner, while Attorney at Law Visvalingam Mathivannan appeared for the other petitioner.
