SJB is committed to modern health bill instead of anti democratic 20A … Sajith

Leader of the Opposition and the Leader of Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Sajith Premadasa has stated that his party was committed to a sustainable modern health bill instead of the anti-democratic Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution.

He made this observation in a special statement issued. Sajith said:

“Let’s commit to a sustainable modern health bill Instead of the anti-democratic Twentieth Amendment. The spread of the corona epidemic has taken a heavy toll on people’s lives. At the same time, instead of securing the lives of the people, the government is trying to secure its power, and above all else, the government is pursuing the Twentieth Amendment.

The people, who believed that the government would stand up for the safety of their lives, gave the present government a huge two-thirds majority. But the government’s response is to move rapidly towards an anti-democratic dictatorship. What must a responsible people’s government do when in dire straits as a country?

Ensuring a strong healthcare system that can overcome unfortunate disasters like COVID is an urgent need of the time. What needs to be done is to pass a "sustainable, modern health care bill" rather than the Twentieth Amendment, which seeks to bring about a power madness. The need for such a strong people’s bill will become more and more acute in the future.

Billions of people around the world have been devastated by the corona disaster, and many countries have begun to pay special attention to their health laws. But the situation in this country is completely different. Power greed and mere popular political tactics have overshadowed the people’s priorities and narrow expectations have surfaced. The current government’s actions prove its fraudulent nature.

Our country, which was hit by the first corona wave, is on the verge of another catastrophe with the second wave. In the face of such a collapse, the government and the Speaker are trying to present the Supreme Court decision on the 20th Amendment in parliament on the 20th and get it passed by a two-day debate.

We regret that the Government’s haste to pass an Anti - Democratic Bill is lacked for the passage of an essential Health Bill at this moment, and the Government must immediately identify the specific need and act on. We are forcing the government to do so in the name of the people and democracy.”
