19A must not be changed for it is essential to preserve democracy … Vajira

Former minister and a United National Party (UNP) parliamentary election candidate Vajira Abeywardana has observed that the 19th constitutional amendment must not be changed despite strong resistance from the current government.

He said:

“We have created a rigid democratic structure through the 19th amendment. The current government will not win a parliamentary majority at the August 5 parliamentary election, to amend the constitution as planned. Even if we lose, a government can be established based on a majority approval. It was in this manner that the former government, in which he was minister, had formed an administration despite winning only 40 seats out of 225.”
