UNP rejects Expert Committee’s report on MCC Agreement

The United National Party (UNP) has rejected the Report by the head of the Presidential Committee on the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement alleging that it lacked credibility.

UNP made this observation in a press release issued by the UNP media unit. The statement said:

“The United National Party refutes the allegations levelled against the former Yahapalanaya Government by Prof. Lalithasiri Gunaruwan’s committee report regarding the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement.

The Embassy of the United States of America to Sri Lanka and the Maldives has categorically denied that the MCC had released any funds to the Sri Lankan Government.

This official denial by the US Government has called into question the credibility of the report, and suggests that the President and the Government are using official resources to slander the United National Party during an election period. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) had used “baseless accusations” during the Presidential Election and alleged that the Government was doing so again to mislead voters.

The United National Party urges the Government to publicly state whether they will be signing the MCC agreement, and if they are not, they must inform the public of their final decision.

During the COVID-19 outbreak, the Government had received financial and medical assistance from several international organisations and countries including the World Bank, the European Union and the US, but failed to publicly declare the exact amount they have received, and what the funds and supplies have been used for.”
