Hearing of FR petitions challenging general elections: SC to resume today

Supreme Court is to resume today, Tuesday, May 26 the further hearing of the seven fundamental rights petitions filed, challenging the dissolution of Parliament and holding the general election.

The five- judge bench of the Supreme Court hearing the petitions comprises Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and Justices Buwaneka Aluwihare, Sisira de Abrew, Priyantha Jayawardena and Vijith Malalgoda.

Additional Solicitor General Indika Demuni de Silva, appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, requested the Supreme Court to dismiss the FR petitions that challenge the date of the General Election, without taking them up for hearing.

President’s Counsel Saliya Pieris, appearing for the National Election Commission informed that the General Elections cannot be held on 20th June 2020.

Following this announcement, President’s Counsel Sumanthiran submitted that his client would withdraw his petition since the relief he sought had been granted.

President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva brought to the notice of Court that the Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe had informed his client Secretary to the President Dr. P.B. Jayasundera, in a letter, that the elections process could commence under the prevailing situation in the country.
