Wijedasa’s proposal to eliminate smaller parties from Parliament displays his poor comprehension of political realities … D.E.W Gunasekera

DEW Gunasekera
Communist Party Leader D.E.W.Gunasekera has criticized Parliamentarian Wijedasa Rajapakse for his contention to remove smaller parties from Parliament to eliminate extremism as impractical and lack of comprehension of the issue in the right perspective.

He was addressing the media. During his address, Gunasekera said:

“Wijedasa must understand that extremism and terrorism cannot be eliminated by mere constitutional changes. Solutions could be found only by addressing the root causes for such behaviour. If Wijeyadasa thinks that he can fulfill racist and political ideology by removing the smaller parties from Parliament, it reveals his ignorance and inability to understand the reasons for the southern and northern insurrections.

We request Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa not to distort the political history of the country to further racist and political ideology. Wijeyadasa’s claim that the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa had, through the 15th Amendment to the Constitution, reduced the District Votes Cut Off Point from 12.5 percent to 5 percent, to obtain the support of the Muslim Congress at the December 1988 Presidential Election was a blatant falsehood.

The Communist Party, LSSP, JVP, MEP, NSSP and JHU were in the forefront of the campaign to reduce the District Votes Cut Off Point long before the Tamil and Muslim parties made such a request. Our proposal was made to strengthen democracy and not to foster extremism as claimed by Wieyadasa.”
