Refrain from strike action on the eve of presidential poll: Mahinda Deshapriya tells trade unions

Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya

Chairman of the National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has made a request to all trade unions in the public sector and private sector not to engage in strikes on the eve of presidential poll to be held on November 17.

The Elections Commission has in its statement observed that since the entire public service is one mechanism during the election process, the trade union action would affect its success.

The Elections Commission has appealed to all trade unions presently engaged in trade union action to call off their strikes through discussions. It would hamper the postal voting services and other activities of the presidential election.

The Elections Commission has emphasized that maximum support of public servants was required to conduct a free and fair election.
