Govt plans to sign agreements violating the constitution: Dinesh charges

Dinesh Gunawardena

Joint Opposition Parliamentarian MEP Leader Dinesh Gunawardena has charged that the government was entering into international agreements detrimental to the country and in violation of the constitution.

He made this charge moving an adjournment motion in the House. He stated that the government was planning to sign several agreements with some foreign countries, namely, Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA) and Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact (MCC), in violation of the Constitution of Sri Lanka and urged the government to present the content of those agreements to Parliament. The whole country is concerned about these agreements.

He went on that some agreements concerning security and defence matters might jeopardise the regional peace among the countries in the Indian Ocean from the time of Indo-Lanka agreement. Non-Aligned policy was the cornerstone of our foreign policy. Sri Lanka had the support of all countries in the Indian Ocean region. The military nature in some of these agreements may have negative impacts on Sri Lanka. United States of America is one of the leading importers of our goods. However, that did not mean that we should compromise our sovereignty. Even President Maithripala Sirisena had expressed his reservations about them. However, the government was continuing with the agreements stubbornly.
