UPFA Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma has charged that any move by President Maithripala to consult the Supreme Court on the length of his term of office would tantamount to delaying polls.

He added that such move will also have a negative impact on the current talks between Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the Sri Lanka Podhujana Peramuna to form a broad alliance against the UNP and the current government.

He made these observations speaking to reporters at the office of the Opposition Leader in Colombo.

He was referring to a recent statement made by SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera that President would seek the opinion of the Supreme Court on his last day in office as the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was signed into law by the Speaker in June 2015.
