The current political crisis will be resolved within a week : Maithripala Sirisena assures

President Maithripala Sirisena has assured the nation that the current political crisis would be resolved within a week.

He made this assurance addressing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) convention at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday, December 4.

During his address, President Sirisena said:

“All political leaders and parties should work together to reach a settlement to end the political crisis for the sake of the country, the people and the future generations.

I maintain that I will not appoint Ranil Wickremasinghe as Premier. Why do I say this? I have no personal issues with him and it is not because we are from different parties. I say this because he is an alien to this country; his vision doesn’t belong in Sri Lanka. We have a rich history, a vibrant culture, traditions and religious principles, of many great sages but this man has not been influenced by any of these. So my decision is clearly a political one. UNP supporters that had voted for me in 2015 must understand the reasons for my decision to remove Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister.

This happened because Ranil Wickremesinghe destroyed the UNP. The UNP was a giant under the leadership of D. S. Senanayake, Dudley Senanayake, J.R. Jayewardene, R. Premadasa and D. B. Wijetunga. They felt the pulse of the people, but Wickremesinghe is numb because of the far right neoliberal ideology that he espouses.

I issued five Gazzette notifications using executive powers. “These gazettes were signed using my powers with an intention of building a new society free from corruption and fraud.

This political crisis may sometimes be a novel experience to our country after 1948 but it is no longer a novel phenomenon for the rest of the countries in the world. Many countries where democracy reigns, witnessed this type of crisis. Germany did not have a government for over six months as Chancellor Angela Merkel did not have required majority. Italy did not have a government for over five weeks after a General Election . “Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was removed all of a sudden.

The Court of Appeal issued an interim order restraining Mahinda Rajapaksa from functioning as Prime Minister till the final determination of the petition of quo warranto, filed by 122 Parliamentarians. Many felt that a viharadhipathy (incumbent of a temple) had delivered a sermon which should have been best left to a Mahanayake Thera. I have respect towards the judiciary and I will accept the decisions taken by the court always.

The people in the North have been taken for a ride by Wickremesinghe. He hesitates to solve issues of the people in the Northern province.

Despite the perception that Wickremesinghe cared about the plight of the minorities, he brought in a number of acts that stripped away the rights given to Provincial Councils by the 13th amendment. Moreover he betrayed the Tamil people by not carrying out things that could have been easily done for them.”
