United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has observed that they are prepared to face a general election conducted under a legitimate government.

He made this observation addressing a rally in Galle on Monday. During his lengthy address, Ranil said:

"The Court of Appeal has told Mahinda Rajapaksa to get out. I will also ask them to leave in the name of god. The Court has said that this is not an order against a government but against a group of people and, therefore, the relevant authority can appoint a Prime Minister and a Cabinet in the proper way.

The verdict does not create any issue for state administration and that the MP who commands a majority in Parliament should be the Prime Minister. The UNP has obtained affidavits from MPs and those can be handed over to the President soon.

In 2015, we made Maithripala Sirisena the President; we did that because we trusted him. The UNP was given command of the government and I was made the Prime Minister. We want to strengthen democracy and parliament. I will ensure that we will not betray the people’s mandate. We will not let anyone violate the Constitution. Our struggle is to form a new government, according to the mandate we got from the people (in 2015), govern the country and then hold an election.

After establishing a government, the UNP would consult all political parties and will hold the election if all agreed. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that they want elections in 2019. They should talk to the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). They can decide when to hold elections. If they agree for an early election we have no problem. Rajapaksa can’t continue with this charade, two court orders have been given against him.

Due to the political instability the economy has suffered greatly. There are no tourists, the rupee has collapsed, the prices of goods are going up and they haven’t even distributed school uniforms for 2019."
