Welgama takes on Mahinda for suggesting his brother as contender for presidential candidature

Welgama-700-01

Joint Opposition Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama has criticized former President Rajapaksa Mahidna Rajapakse for his statement in India that his brother is a contender for presidential candidature of his party.

Speaking to the media, Welgama stated that Mahinda faced defeat at the last presidential election due to this family centered rule. Many ministers were disheartened as the former President placed his family above everything. Our family belongs to everyone. One family cannot claim ownership to presidential candidacy.

He added that there were many seniors in the party outside the family circle of the former President who were suitable to run for presidency.

He said:"We have to understand that J.R Jayewardene did not willingly give presidential candidacy to his successor, Ranasinghe Premadasa. Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga did not willingly nominate Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Presidential candidate. The Joint Opposition would not be hesitant to take a strong stand if Rajapaksa attempted to keep Presidential candidacy within his own family.

We should not forget that Maithripala Sirisena left our government and contested against us because he was not given the rightful place within the administration.

If he (Mahinda) is considering Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the Presidential candidate, then Gotabhaya must first clear his name. He must revoke his dual citizenship. Without doing these things, there's no point even talking about a Gotabhaya candidacy.

There are many more suitable politicians than the brothers of the former President as Presidential candidates. The former President must realize that.

Look at Maithripala Sirisena. He was not appreciated and given the right place in the party and he went on to steal the Presidency from Mahinda Rajapaksa. The former President cannot afford to make the same mistakes. He cannot afford another blunder."
