Mahinda-S-700-01

Ports and Shipping Minister and SLFP spokesman Mahinda Samarasinghe has dismissed the allegation made by National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa's claim that 250 Indians had been settled in the Vanni as canard.

He was addressing the media at the SLFP Office at party office at T.B. Jayah Mawatha. Samarasinghe stated that Weerawansa was making an attempt to deceive the public. Since the conclusion of the conflict in May 2009, approximately 10,000 Sri Lankans had fled the country returned. The ongoing United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) managed project to repatriate Sri Lankans carried out with the direct involvement of Sri Lankan diplomatic mission in Chennai.

He categorically stated that no foreign nationals had been settled in any part of Sri Lanka. He said: "Let me clearly state that no Indian or any other foreign nationals have been settled in any part of the country. Any such reports are false. MP Weerawansa is wrong. We have not settled any foreign nationals. Weerawansa needs to get his facts right."
