Rajitha, Mangala express dissent over executing death penalty for drug convicts

Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has observed that he is against the proposal made by President Maithripala Sirisena to execute death penalty to drug convicts.

He stated that while most of the ministers agreed to the proposal, he is opposed to it on a matter of principle. Implementing it would not achieve the desired result.

Likewise, Finance and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweerea too has expressed his objection to the cabinet proposal by president Maithripala Sirisena that death penalty should be reintroduced in order to curb the narcotic drugs menace. He suggested that instead drug smugglers should be given a life imprisonment.
