President to sign orders to execute death sentence for convicted drug traffickers

President Maithripala Sirisena has observed that he would sign the relevant orders to execute capital punishment for convicted drug traffickers who carry out large scale drug smuggling operations while in detention.

He stated that he made this proposal to the cabinet of ministers and got their approval since a vast majority of Sri Lanka's drug racketeers especially those who engage in trafficking heroin and ecstasy pills, continue to operate drug networks even after they were caught and punished by the court of law.

He was speaking at an event in Getambe. President observed: "I will sign orders to execute the death penalty on those who have been sentenced to death because of drug offences and who continue to engage in large scale drug rackets even after being sentenced to death.

There could be a lot of debate over my signing as a Buddhist. But the President has to sign to implement the death penalty on those who have been sentenced to death. I will not be committing a sin. I will do it for the entire society, the country and on behalf of the future generations."
