Cabinet's assent to implement death penalty for persons convicted of drug charges

The Cabinet of Ministers has given its assent to a proposal made by President Maithripala Sirisena to implement the death penalty against those on death row for drug dealing.

The proposal has been made in the context of an upsurge in narcotic offences in the country and following reports that those in the prisons sentenced to death for drug offences are behind the deals.

Reports indicate that President had instructed Justice and Prisons Reforms Minister Thalatha Atukorale to submit to him a detailed report on the lists of inmates in prisons for drug offences.
