Speaker Jayasuriya gives assent to Judicature (Amendment) Bill

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya on Tuesday, May 15 laid his signature to the Judicature (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in Parliament on May 9. The said Bill was passed in Parliament with 119 Parliamentarians voting in favour and 52 MPs voting against it.

The Bill presented by the Minister of Justice amends the Judicature Act, No. 2 of 1978. The Determination of the Supreme Court in regard of the Bill was announced to the House by the Speaker on April 3, 2018. The passage of the Act paves the way for a Permanent High Court at Bar to try, hear and determine the trials of the offences specified in the Sixth Schedule of the Act.
