Mahinda calls for dissolution of Parliament, holding of general election

Former President and Kurunegala Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa has requested President Maithripala Sirisena to respect the results of the local government polls, dissolve Parliament and hold general elections.

He was speaking at a media briefing. Mahinda further stated that the victory of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) at the Local Government elections was historic for it was achieved within a short period of time since the party was formed. It was able to win 232 councils at the Local Government elections while the other two main political parties suffered a heavy defeat.

He went on that the Local Government election was in fact an unofficial referendum to see the pulse of the public on the achievements of the Government since it took office in 2015. The results clearly indicate that the public had rejected the policies and the actions of the Government. It was a vote against division. It was a vote against sale of government properties.
