SLPP secures massive victory, major parties taken aback


Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna led by GL.Peris and backed by Mahinda Rajapakse has won a massive victory in the recently concluded local government polls.

It secured the highest number of members for local bodies in the recently concluded local government polls numbering 3369. It bagged 222 councils. UNP secured 2389 members and bagged 41 councils. UPFA got 674 members. SLFP got 358 and bagged 7 councils. JVP bagged 431 members. ITAK got 407 members and secured 34 councils.

Major political parties have been taken aback by the results of the polls. Leaders of traditional parties are holding meetings to ascertain the reasons for their defeat.

Joint Opposition has demanded the resignation of the government. SLFP ministers had an urgent meeting with SLFP Chairman President Maithripala Sirisena. Champika has urged the government to rectify its failures by taking forward its mandate effectively.

JVP has observed that people have rejected the coalition government of the SLFP and the UNP. It further expressed displeasure that the results have let the evil force that destroyed democracy to raise its ugly head again.

Tamil National Alliance has urged all Tamil parties to ally together for finding a political solution through an enactment of a new constitution in the wake of the verdict of the south.
