CoPE has summoned all parties relatd to controversial Sharia University for investigation: Sunil Handunnetti

CoPE Chairman JVP lawmaker Sunil Handunnetti has stated that all parties pertaining to Batticaloa Campus Ltd. including the Board of Investment (BoI), University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka (UGC), and Tertiary Education Authority of Sri Lanka have been summoned before the Committee on 21 May over the controversial Sharia University project.

He was addressing Parlaiment. He said:

“I am summoning these people before CoPE making use of my authority. The Batticaloa Campus Ltd was given 35 acres of land which belongs to the Mahaweli Authority based on a request of a farmer organisation by the name of Hira. The Chairman of the organisation is the Governor of the Eastern Province M.L.A.M. Hizbullah.

I don’t understand why Minister Lakshman Kiriella is hesitant to mention the name Hizbullah. Who authorised this?. This Government has made use of not only the votes but it seems that this Government has made use of their money. That is why the Government is unable to make a decision.

This institute tries to register as a University these days. Now the government tries to escape from this problem by saying that this controversial project was started during the former government. Let us say that it is true.

But then, why did the current government let the project to continue without any investigation? Giving Hizbullah this university is similar to assigning hens to a fox to look after. Don’t convert this controversial establishment into a State university or a tertiary education institution until the investigations conclude.

We have learnt that the President is now trying to identify it as a private university and hand over the university to Hizbullah. President Maithripala Sirisena wanted that institute to be a private university with degree awarding status. I wonder under whose ownership the President wishes to establish this so called institute. Is he hoping to transfer the ownership of it to Governor Hizbullah like Dr. Neville Fernando owned the medical faculty of the SAITM?

We should investigate these things thoroughly. That is why I hope to summon all the relevant institutions related to this project in front of the COPE. I am doing it within the power I have as the COPE Chairman. Everyone related to this project should be questioned.”
