TNA sees eye to eye with JO in condemning the inordinate delay in holding PC polls: Sampanthan

Tamil National Alliance Leader Parliamentarian R. Sampanthan has observed that the TNA is in complement agreement with the Joint Opposition in condemning the inordinate delay in holding provincial council polls.

He made this statement in Parliament recently. He was responding to the charge made by JO Parliamentarian Dullas Allahaperuma that TNA was silent over this issue which is of great significance to the Tamil people in the north and east.

Sampanthan categorically stated that the TNA’s stance was that the Provincial Council Elections should be held as early as possible.

Sampanthan said:

"The Provincial Councils were intended to give the people of different provinces a measure of self-respect and dignity by being able to share in the powers of governance. The journey was not yet complete; pointing out that the process of drafting a new Constitution aimed at power sharing was now in limbo.

I’m in complete agreement with the Joint Opposition. We want PC elections to be held as early as possible, in the whole country, including the Tamil areas in the North and East. That is our position.

There can be no democratic governance unless elections were held and representatives elected to the PCs to establish provincial administration. It was not something that Governors could do.”
