TNA’s silence over inordinate delay in holding PC polls causes concerns: Allahaperuma charges

UPFA Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma has charged that the silence of the Tamil National Alliance on the inordinate delay in holding the provincial council polls has caused serious concerns.

He made this charge opening the Parliamentary debate on the Expenditure Head of the Ministry of Internal and Home Affairs and Provincial Councils and Local Government. He condemned the government for continuing to delay the PC elections for over one and half years.

He said:

“In view of the fact that the PCs were established under the 13th Amendment with the aim of making the Tamil people a stakeholder in the political process, TNA’s silence over this matter is intriguing.

It was now one and a half years since the Eastern PC was dissolved while it was five months since the Northern PC was dissolved. If this was done under Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidency, the TNA would have labeled him a dictator. The TNA should have pressured the Government to hold the election.

Holding a debate on the Ministry of Provincial Councils was useless unless concrete steps were taken to allow people to democratically elect their representatives to those PCs and allow them to function properly. The Southern Provincial Council, which is one of the three Provincial Councils still functioning, will end in 12 days. The term of the Western Provincial Council will end in 24 days. Nobody knows when the elections will be held.”
