JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayke has charged that President Maithripala Sirisena had not complied with his constitutional duty and skipped the sittings of the House.
He was speaking in Parliament. He said:
“As per the provisions of the Constitution, the President is responsible to Parliament and expected to attend parliament sessions at least once in three months. The last time the incumbent President came to Parliament chamber was on Oct 12, last year. Now more than three months have lapsed. So, he has not complied with his responsibility.
According to the Constitution the President is duty bound to attend parliament sessions, but now it could be seen clear that he is not following the Constitution and we would like to know the position of the government in this regard.
I would like to refer the question to the Leader of the House and demand a response. What is your position in this matter? How would you explain the absence of the President for over three months?"
