Formulate people friendly economic policies, else people will rise: Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa

Mahinda Rajapaksa700 2

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa has urged the government to formulate people friendly economic policies and implement them. The government should not be 100% certain about being in power, as the people would rise against its economic policy which is not a people-friendly one.

He was speaking on the debate on the Vote on Account in the Parliament. During his speech, Mahinda Rajapakse said:

“When we view the economy of the country between the period I was ousted from power in January 2015 with the situation on 26 October, businesses were incurring losses and have faced greater constraints, with some even having to shut down, resulting in the loss of employment.

You didn’t allow us to build the country. We had to change your unfavourable tax policy. You could have reduced the fuel prices before I brought it down. The oil barrel went to $ 28 level during the Coalition Government. We reduced VAT, giving room for people to work, but you didn’t allow us to continue. There are families which only had one meal per day. The Government must reduce prices of essential items.

We as politicians have no excuse if we are unable to reduce the cost of living.

We deny that my appointment as Prime Minister on 26 October was unconstitutional. Our government was not established with a coup. We didn’t do any coup. But please keep that in mind that your chairs are not safe with us in the Opposition. Along with the people the Opposition will stand against your program, which is unfavourable for the country.

The government does not need to follow every instruction issued by the International Monetary Fund. The fuel prices were not reduced until I as the then Prime Minister, took a decision to decrease fuel prices and remove the VAT. I will analyze the Vote on Account and express my point of view soon.”
