Sampanthan holding opposition leader post is distortion of parliamentary democracy, Mahinda leads largest group: Dinesh

JO Leader Dinesh Gunawardena has pleaded that Tamil Naional Alliance Leader holding the post of the opposition leader is a distortion of parliamentary democracy.

He made this observation raising a point of order in Parliament. He stated that the Speaker could not be dictated by an "incompetent, ignorant and inefficient General Secretary of a party."

He said:"We made a written request to appoint a new opposition leader from the JO and you promised to give a ruling on it today. We like to know your decision with regard to this matter.

JO was eligible to hold the opposition leader's post because it had the support of 70 members in the House. We have nothing against the incumbent Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan but our point is that this post is traditionally given to the group which has most number of seats in the Opposition.

This is an issue that distorts Parliament democracy. You admitted that the ground situation has changed when we met you in person, JO group led by former President Mahinda Rajapaka is the largest group in the Opposition."
