Former Minister and Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawanse was released on bail by Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne. He was ordered cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and two sureties of Rs. 500,000 each. His foreign travel was banned. His passport was surrendered to the Court.
He had been on remand since January on allegation of having abused 40 public vehicles causing a loss of Rs. 90.1 million to the state. The Financial crimes Investigation Division has complained to the Magistrate that Weerawansa abused public property during the previous government.
The Bail application filed on behalf of Weerawansa was supported by President’s Counsel, Shavindra Fernando.
