“Compassion – The foundation of Ahimsa” was the theme of the two day Buddha Pournima celebrations at Prashanthy Nilayam. Around 300 Devotees from 10 Nations - Malasiya, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Lao, Taiwan, Nepal, Japan and Srilanka, of Zone IV and V, participated on the first day of two days Buddha Pournima Celebrations.


Buddhists all over the island took part in prayers and religious activities in Vihares on Vesak Poya Day. Special rituals were held with the participation of Bhikkus and devotees. The devotees offered floral tributes at the feet of Lord Buddha statue and chanted prayers.

Vesak was celebrated at Pussellawa in the upcountry by the people with devotion. Hundreds of people went around the area watching Vesak decorations.


The fiftieth anniversary of establishment of Washington Buddhist Vihara was held recently. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser was the Chief Guest. Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to US Prasad Kariyawasam was also present.
